HAZRAT SHOAIB ALAIHISSALAM, a descendant of Ibrahim in fifth generation, was sent to the Midianites. Allah says: and to Midyan (We sent) their brother Shoaib. He said: O my people, serve Allah, you have no god other than Him. Clear proof has indeed came to you from your Lord, so give full measure and weight and diminish not to measure their things, and make not mischief in the land after its reform. This is better for you if you are believers. And lie not in wait on every road, threatening and turning away from Allah’s Way him who believes in Him, and seeking to make it crooked. And remember when you were few, then He multiplied you, and see what was the end of the mischief-makers. And if there is party of you who believe in that where-with I am sent and another party who believe not, then wait patiently till Allah judges between us; and He is the Best of Judges (Aaraf, 7:85-87).

The arrogant chiefs of his people said: we will certainly turn thee out, O Shoaib, and those who believe with thee from our town, or you shall come back to our religion. He said: even though we dislike it?

Shoaib (further) said: Indeed we should have forged a lie against Allah, if we go back to your religion after Allah has delivered us from it. And it is not for us to go back to it, unless Allah our Lord, pleases. Our Lord comprehends all things in His knowledge. In Allah, do we trust. Our Lord! decide between us and our people with truth, and Thou art: the Best of Deciders (Aaraf, 7:88-89).

And the Chiefs of his people, who disbelieved said: if you follow Shoaib, you are surely the losers (Aaraf, 7:90).

Shoaib said: I see you in prosperity and I fear for you the chastisement of an all-encompassing day (Hood, 11:84).

They said: O Shoaib, does thy prayer enjoin thee that we should forsake what our fathers worshipped or that we should not do what we please with our property? Forsooth thou art the forbearing, the right directing one (Hood, II:89).

Shoaib said: O my people, see you if I have a clear proof from my Lord and He hrs given me a goodly sustenance from Himself. And I desire not to act in opposition to you, in that which I forbid you. I desire nothing but reform, so far as I am able. And with none but Allah is the direction of my affair to a right issue. In Him I trust and to Him I turn. And O my people, let not opposition to me make you guilty so that there may befall you like of that which befell the people of Nooh, or the people of Hood, or the people of Swaleh. Nor tare the people of Loot far off from you. And ask forgiveness of your Lord, then turn to Him. Surely my Lord is Merciful, Loving, Kind (Hood, II: 88-90).

They said: O Shoaib, we understand not much of what you say and surely we see thee to be the weak among us. And were it not for thy family, we would surely stone thee, and you are not mighty against us (Hood, II:91).

Shoaib said: 0 my people, is my family more esteemed by you than Allah? And you neglect Him as a thing cast behind your backs? Surely my Lord encompasses what you do. And 0 my people act according to your ability, I too am acting. You will come to know soon who it is on whom will light the punishment that will disgrace him, and who it is that is a liar. And watch, surely I too am watching with you (Hood, II:92-93).

They said: you are only a deluded person. And you are nothing but a mortal like ourselves, and we deem you to be a liar. So cause a portion of the heaven to fall on us, if you are truthful (Shu’ara 26: 185-187).

Shoaib said: my Lord knows best what you do. But they rejected him, so the chastisement of the Day of Covering overtook them. Surely it was the chastisement of a grievous day (Shu’ra, 26: 188-189). A severe earthquake overtook them and they lay prostrate in their abodes (Ankabut, 29:37). They were motionless bodies in their abodes, as though they had never dwelt therein. They were the losers (Aaraf, 7:91-92).

Quran says that Shoaib and those who believed in him were saved by the Mercy of Allah (Hood, II:94). Shoaib then turned away from them and said: O my people, indeed I delivered to you the Message of my Lord and I gave you good advice; how then, should I be sorry for a disbelieving people? (Aaraf, 7:93).

Prophet Shoaib is mentioned as Jethro in the Bible. The Holy Prophet Mohammad (P.B.U.H.) calls him “Khateeb-ul-Ambia” or “Speaker of Prophets” because he was a very eloquent speaker. He was alive when Moses came to Midyan from Egypt. He also married his daughter to Moses (Qasas, 28: 22-28).

The descendants of Prophet Yaqoob and his twelve sons including Prophet Yusuf all had settled in Egypt and flourished there for about three centuries. Then Pharoah, another famous monarch of the human history, came in power and declared himself to be the god of people and the people actually started prostrating before him. One night Pharoah saw a strange dream which was interpretted to mean that amongst the Bani Israil there was going to be born a child who would destroy his kingdom. Pharoah therefore subjected the Bani Israil to hard tasks and punishments and ordered killing of their newly born male children (Baqara, 2:49).
